Do this in the last few minutes before the start. Sail a minute on starboard, tack, sail a minute on port. Each leg opens with a 10-second warm-up that records nothing, so getting up to speed and the tack itself don't contaminate the average.

An audio compass. It calls your heading — "heading zero four five" — every time it moves 5° from the last heading it said out loud. Damped like a real compass card, so wandering in a seaway won't set it off.
